Ideal World or The Kingdom of God?

Several years ago, I taught a class on Christian Ethics at the local Moody Extension School. Through my studies, I became more convinced of my suspicion that the Church is mistaken when they make evangelism or even some “tend the culture” mandate they think they have into a matter of clashing moralities. I frequently say that Christianity is not a morality. Continue reading

Dream 11/2009

I wanted to tell about a dream I had recently. I found it hilarious and it seems obvious what it “means”. First, some background.

For a large portion of my life, I have had a recurring dream, based in the area where I grew up. I am in the woods at the end of my street and I am going home. In the dream, I am 8-10 years old and I walk home the way an 8-10 year old would. I climb a tree, swing over to another tree (during the swing, I would feel my muscles working and moving against gravity). There are wires as the woods break away into the houses. I go by them and swing up to a large, 8 ft high, wood fence (did not exist in my real neighborhood). I walk down on the top, keeping my balance with my arms outstretched. Right before my house, I drop down off the fence and go into the neighbor’s (the Trotts) house. I sit down at their kitchen table and just relax a bit. I have no interaction with them, they don’t even know I am there. It’s dark out now and I assume they are asleep. After a bit, I go out back and climb over the fence. At my house, I climb up the outside and into my bedroom window. End of dream. None of this is done sneakily. I am not hiding anything or escaping from anything. I am going home from the woods. The entire trip is done alone with no interactions with anybody. Though I see my friend’s houses as I walk past them, I do not see anybody. As I said, this has been a recurring dream fairly frequent (a couple of times a year) and fairly consistent (no variations in its content).

In November a year and a half ago, that dream came again. As I decide its time to go, I look up and the leaves are off the trees. My swing to the tree is made with great effort with neither the tree nor my muscles cooperating (I don’t feel aches but my muscles sure had to work harder). I get to the clearing and the wires are hanging far lower than I remember. I get to the top of the wooden fence and it is in need of repair. The beam on the top is weak and the whole fence sways back and forth as I walk on it. When I get off, it is more like the fence threw me. At the neighbor’s house, I sit at the table and call my brother to meet me. So he and his wife are there at the table with me, but a dog starts barking. The neighbors get up to see what the barking is about and it’s not the Trotts.
What are you doing in my house?
No, no, it’s okay, I’m just going home. I do this all the time.
But you’re in my house!
Really, it’s okay, I haven’t even looked in your refrigerator
I’m calling the police
Go ahead, if you want, but I can tell you everything’s okay.
End of dream and I haven’t had it since.

The Right Notes

I was at a service when a group got up to sing. It was a trio of people who had sung together for a long time and they were doing a medley. The first song started off with no accompaniment, just the voices. It sounded great, nice tone and good harmonies between the three voices. Then, the piano joined in and there was a moment of clash, as the voices had started off in the wrong key! I couldn’t tell until the piano joined, but then it was obvious and the voices had to change to match the piano. Once they adjusted, the rest of the song went on the way it was written.

In the book of 2 Timothy, Paul writes this about the Scriptures, Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. (vv 16,17) God has given us a revelation through which we may know him and his will. This is necessary because we are here living our lives in ways that make sense and yet the narrowness of our perspective is not sufficient to see the bigger picture. Just like the singers, we start off in a way that sounds right and we can even make it sound beautiful, but when we see the teaching of the revelation, we realize we need to correct what we are doing, if we wish to line up with what God is doing.

As the introduction of the piano caused some clash between where the singers were and where they should have been, often the Scriptures reveal that kind of disharmony in our lives. In the end, however, the lives that have accepted the correction of the Scriptures are those who live in harmony with God’s plan.

BLESSED ARE THE PERSECUTED Matthew 5:10

This is the eighth beatitude. One major observation to be made is it is not a characteristic of the believer but describes how others react to the believer. That is why I place this verse as a transition from the first section – the believer’s character – to the second – the believer’s influence. How others react is something quite out of your control, though there are some Christians who make up for that by being deliberately offensive. So, the qualifier in this verse is important: persecuted for righteousness’ sake. It does not refer to being persecution for being bizarre, or being belligerent, or being insulting even if you convince yourself that you are doing such things in the Name of the Lord. Being offensive is not the same thing as causing offense. It is Righteousness that causes offense. Continue reading

I Am a Business Executive

I am a business executive. That means, according to Obama, I am the enemy. Yet, I am the one who creates jobs! And he wants to tax me out of business? That doesn’t make sense. What really needs to happen is the Government ease my tax and regulation burdens so I am free to hire people. So, after lowering my personal income taxes, the first thing the government should do is eliminate the minimum wage. That way, I can get rid of one $18/hr position and replace it with two $6/hr positions. That’s twice the jobs! Everybody wins. But really, since I already have one guy doing the work it wouldn’t make sense to hire two, so one guy can make $6/hr and I’ll wait until business picks up to get the other guy in. But that IS two jobs. On the other hand, I can get some Indonesian 8 year-old for maybe $1.50 a day – 14 hour day at that! Say what you will, but that little boy is proud, proud! to be a contributor to his family. American kids could sure learn stuff like pride and contributing. Plus, no stifling government regulations on safety and environmental stuff. So that’s where that $18/hr job is going to go. But remember that I said there will be two $6/hr jobs (Did I mention they will be 31 hours a week? After 32 hours you get into all this benefits crap. Obama has no idea what a HUGE burden that is.), but it just does not make good business sense to start them up right now with all the uncertainty of having a socialist president. I tell you, though, once the Government gets off my back with all those regulations and do stuff that helps me for a change, I think you can expect that I will create the jobs this country needs. And when I get my multi-million dollar bonus for this business creation plan, the Government better not want to tax it. Tax it for what? So all those women can pick up their welfare checks in Cadillacs? Seriously, what has the Government ever created?

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS Matthew 5:9

This is the seventh beatitude. It says that a characteristic of the child of God is peacemaking. The characteristic shows a “family resemblance” to the Father, for God is not characterized by disorder but by peace. (1 Corinthians 14:33) I don’t want to get too far into an etymological fallacy, but the Greek word, εἰρηνοποιοί, combines the words for peace (εἰρήνη – source for our word “irenic” it means peace and like the Hebrew word shalom also implies prosperity) with the word make (ποιέω – source of our word “poem” it means to do, make or craft). The combined word is always used of causing war or strife to cease, not giving prosperity. It is an active word that means personal involvement to bring peace rather than the passive not wanting to get involved. Continue reading

BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART Matthew 5:8

This is the sixth beatitude. It says that the pure in heart are blessed. Looking at the heart first, it is good to note that the cosmology (or is it anthropology?) of Jesus’ day was different than ours. Continue reading

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL Matthew 5:7

The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, (Exodus 34:6 ESV)

The Exodus quote shows that the characteristic in fifth Beatitude is a characteristic of God, one that he proclaimed about himself when revealing his glory to Moses. When we are merciful, we are acting out of the new self, in the image of the Creator (Colossians 3:10). Continue reading

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS – Matthew 5:6

The fourth Beatitude is Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied. (Matthew 5:6) Like the first Beatitude, a physical circumstance – one that few of us would want to be in – is used as a metaphor for our spiritual condition. Both hunger and thirst are gnawing, motivating needs. The characteristic emphasized by this Beatitude is an awareness of a lack inside of us – a lack of personal righteousness. This lack will only be satisfied by the righteousness of Christ. Continue reading

BLESSED ARE THE MEEK Matthew 5:5

So far in the Beatitudes, there seems to be a progression of thought. The Poor in Spirit are those who recognize the paucity – the nonexistence – of their spiritual resources apart from God which leads to Mourning for their sin and also for the state that sin’s entering had brought the creation. In Matthew 5:5, Jesus declares blessedness on the Meek, a seeming logical step in the progression. Continue reading
